"I'm just wild about Harry" - NOT

I was in our local library last night and saw a book with the title "What's a Christian to Do with Harry Potter?"  There are, of course, apologists for both sides, as in "Harry Potter and the Bible: The Menace Behind the Magick". If you really want a thorough, well-researched book on it, "Looking for God in Harry Potter" may be your best bet. Publisher's Weekly says that John Granger (the author) is "....a homeschooling Christian father of seven". Of course, it is Publisher's Weekly, who may have a much broader definition of 'Christian' than I would. PW goes on to say that  Granger".....initially resisted when a friend encouraged him to read the Harry Potter books. But Rowling's novels, sprinkled with literary allusions and strong biblical values, won the classicist over quickly, and he became an avid spokesperson for the series."

Dr. Dobson is NOT so wild about Harry Potter, however, and wants to make sure everyone knows it. He was misquoted in a Washington Post article.

I wasn't but now am a Potter supporter after reading the Granger book, "Finding God in Harry Potter." Granger makes what to me is a very compelling case that the Potter books can be useful -- even for Christians. I see it in the same way as John Eldredge would probably see it based on his "Epic" book. If nothing else, the Granger book gave me many, many new insights into the way Rowling used names and types and aspects of magic and alchemy in her book and gave me a greater appreciation for her literary genius -- after the classic tradition. Just MHO up to this point. Ron <
