Officially a dinosaur
I have thought for some time now that I'm increasingly a dinosaur. Now I know what kind: I'm an informavore. An article in Slate tells me that informavores "skim" rather than read word by word. They're "information foragers" and this is increasingly the case because of the internet. The idea came originally from "usability expert" Jakob Nielsen who wrote about it in one of his "influential bi-weekly" posts.
I'm not sure what to think about Slate - they simply don't "get it" when it comes to certain things (an "informavore" knows these things because they take in so much information while foraging). Slate sure doesn't "get" the multi-site church phenomenon, which they wrote about here in "The Chick Fil A Church". I've written before of my experience at National Community Church, which convinced me the multiple site phenomenon can legitimately fulfill the functions of a church without compromising anything, including pastoral care. In fact, one of my favorite campus pastors (Joel Schmidgall) responded faster by e-mail than I've ever experienced from a pastor - and that includes when I was a staff pastor!
Mark Batterson, who planted NCC, then saw God turn his dreams on their head, ministers effectively in the very politically charged culture of DC. He understands the culture and how to reach it to transform it with the Gospel of Christ. You can read about his effectiveness in this interview, "A City Upon 'The Hill'". Mark's got a new book out, BTW. It's next in my reading queue. I can't wait to read it! If you haven't read his last one In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day. "In a Pit..." is on a par with any of Stu Weber's must reads - yes, it's that good.
That's enough for now. This dinosaur needs to forage for more information......
