Catching up on my culture and movie watching
Last weekend we had a chance to watch God Grew Tired of Us, a documentary on the "Lost Boys" of Sudan. Many of these young (now) men were helped by churches here in the United States. It was fascinating to see how they worked to keep in touch with their cultural heritage after they came to the US. I highly recommend it, if you haven't already seen it.
We also managed to catch the last day of the Treasures of Afghanistan exhibit at the National Gallery of Art. The exhibition is the result of the National Museum of Afghanistan finding a way to rescue treasures of their culture from the Taliban. Their motto, inscribed on the outside of their National Museum is "A nation stays alive when its culture stays alive."

the sculptures just outside
the National Gallery.

The lines inside were long on the last
day of the exhibit

The treasures were well worth the
wait, as you can see from this gold
work that was part of the exhibit.
I've already found a documentary for our next "culture" weekend. Michael Craven gave a review of Miss HIVthat makes me want to check it out. It's not often that a movie about AIDs is described as "hopeful".
Got any movie recommendations? I'd love to hear them.
