Maybe it's something in the water
Just a couple of days ago I posted ("Dancing around the third rail and other sports') an entry about the Texas showdown over one of the church's "third rail" issues, the role of women. Now I'm revising my working theory - it may be something in the water in Texas. I first discovered the story on the Dallas Morning News web site. Lifeway Christian Stores has placed the current copy of Gospel Today behind the counter of their stores - sort of like "Baptist porn" - because it has pictures of women pastors on the cover. The woman pastors, BTW, are clothed.
My observations:
- Evangelical Outpost has it right in observing that Gospel Today has had T.D. Jakes and Paula White on the cover and both of these teachers have serious doctrinal differences with Southern Baptist doctrine. I could have told them that the role of women is a third rail kind of thing.
- Sarah Flashing at Flash Point blog also has a balanced take on the brouhaha
I wish the Southern Baptists would get back to what they're good at, keeping "the main thing (the Gospel) the main thing."

The topic of Women in church leadership never ceases to amaze and elude me. Even in churches that have a "solid" stance on the matter don't actually have it down. It is challenged both ways. I have to admit though, it is very hard to keep an "open mind" about a topic that has been so ingrained in me from such a young age that I'm not sure what would happen if I entertained the "other side". Difficult, very difficult. Just my knee-jerk reaction...
