The problem with leaving the church

I've posted before about the problems of the evangelical church. The post over at Relevant Christian honestly begins wrestling with the question of problems in the church in Why I Stay in Church. I could add a few to his "Top Ten list:
  • I've been thrown under the bus a former friend's ambition in church.
  • I've seen a pastor who engaged in homosexual encounters given a very nice severance package AND a good reference to another church.
  • I've seen an individual believer's unmet needs eat up the fabric of a flourishing church as surely as flesh eating bacteria destroys a healthy limb.
But I still keep going back. I keep going back because (at least in part) one of my Bible college profs made an impact on me with a tract he wrote, Have You Quit Eating Just Because Mom Once Burned the Biscuits? I keep going back because I see (sometimes widely scattered) little green shoots of hope as someone seems to be honestly trying to get it right. Focusing on the implications of the Gospel relentlessly.

So..... you can call me dysfunctional (as some in church have), you can call me a lot of things, but I need the Church.

I can't wait to see how Relevant Christian works through it. What about you?

This week I heard this quote and I thought it was good...so I thought I would share:
"I can not be an adequate disciple of Jesus, if I am not in community with other believers."
