Rice bags, literacy and the gospel
My wife just started a new program in her junior Sunday school class a couple of weeks ago. It has since spread to other classes and families outside her class. The program is Mission India's Sonlight Rice Bag Project, and it is designed to spread grass-roots awareness to churches, organizations and families of the the plight of illiterate women and children in India, and as a result to spread the gospel through literacy projects to these women.
200 million women are illiterate in India. If my US census figures are correct, that is over 1/2 the population of the United States. Discounting children from the census numbers that means it equates to almost every adult in the US being illiterate.
From what I've heard from other sources, the Rice Bag Project has spread to over 300 different groups, and should go even further. Take a look at it, and join us in supporting this tremendous ministry opportunity.
