Hard hitting

Cal Thomas' column today is as straightforward as a column can get. It is a "must read" as we head toward nomination of someone to head HHS. "Guilty Consciences" is aptly named. Where is the concept of shame now that we really need it? Not to mention separation of church and state.

Cal Thomas needs to get his facts straight. The rule allowed healthcare workers to deny any type of family planning if they deemed it against their conscience, not just abortion. So if a woman tried to fill a birth-control prescription, a pharmacist could take it upon themselves to deny it regardless of the reason a doctor prescribed it. The rule was too broad, too vague, and put too much power in the hands of healthcare workers over a private decision made by a woman with her doctor. Birth control is not abortion, but this rule allowed it to be treated as such thereby creating a situation where a woman's life could be put in danger because someone's extreme view of family planning equated the pill with abortion. The pro-life movement would do better to invest in reigning in the extremists in its ranks and providing legitimate alternatives to abortion rather than waste its resources lobbying for a poorly worded rule like this one.
