Before this day ends

I want to get a few thoughts down before this 8th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks passes.

This morning's drive to a client meeting was doubled because the President was going to lay a wreath at the Pentagon Memorial. The Pentagon exit was closed and my exit was the one most people chose for a detour. It was raining today here in DC/northern VA.

That day 8 years ago was beautiful and sunny. We woke up on what was supposed to be the next to last day of a much needed vacation. We were celebrating with some much needed time away because Catherine survived cancer and chemo. It began as the kind of day that made you feel good just be alive. We played tourist the day before, enjoying Savannah, a city we'd always wanted to see. While I was shaving Catherine called to me that a plane had just flown into the World Trade Center. As the events of that day unfolded they immediately became personal - our friend Joel was a pilot for American and we didn't know if he was scheduled for the flights that we were watching - there was some early confusion about where they were flying from. We hurriedly packed our bags and jumped in the car. Calls to Joel's cell phone were like all calls to the DC area that day - you couldn't get through. We drove straight through to home. It was more than a little strange to get to Quantico/Triangle and see virtually no traffic. Everyone that would normally have clogged the roads that evening had already been sent home by mid-day.

Several friends have sent me things - reminders really - and its appropriate to share them here.

Here's to the Heroes is a tribute to the military. It gives me chills.

I'm not generally a big fan of the Washington (com)Post but this article is worth reading and reflection.

Hope you spent time today in reflection and prayer.
